Funding Details
Purpose
The Yamagata Fund and the Richard and Melissa Smith Fund are established to provide financial support to BYU–Hawaii students pursuing internship experiences in Oceania and the Asian Rim. These funds are intended to assist students who are exploring career opportunities in the region following graduation. The financial support is supplemental and not intended to cover the full cost of the internship experience.
Airfare Funding
The amount of funding provided varies depending on the location and duration of the internship. In most cases, the scholarship will cover the cost of a round-trip flight to and from the internship destination. All travel arrangements must be made through BYU–Hawaii Travel Services. Students should not book their own airfare, as independently purchased tickets will not be eligible for reimbursement.
Cash Support
In addition to airfare, students will receive a cash deposit to their student account, typically disbursed by Financial Services before the internship begins. The amount of support will vary based on the internship details and is intended to help offset basic living expenses during the internship period.
