Handshake – A New, Multifunctional Job-Discovery and Career Planning Online Platform

Laie, May 31, 2016 – BYU-Hawaii’s Alumni & Career Services department has announced its implementation of Handshake, an online career planning and discovery platform for students.

Handshake provides a user-friendly, mobile platform that connects students to jobs, and recruiters to students. Students can easily find jobs and internships to apply for, optional career-preparation plans to adopt, mentors to counsel with, and career-related information to read. Students are encouraged to make their Handshake profile public, so that recruiters can reach out to students directly, without needing to wait for them to apply.

“One of Handshake’s distinguishing features is its ability to connect students with recruiters in a mobile, modern way…At BYU-Hawaii we have students from more than 70 different countries... and the challenge is to connect students with recruiters from thousands of miles away,” says Mark Macdonald, Director of Alumni & Career Services. “To have an online platform where students and recruiters can contact each other directly helps bridge that gap.”

Handshake benefits more than just distant employers. McDonald’s, Seven Brothers, and other local employers are able to use Handshake to recruit BYU-Hawaii students. Discussions are even underway with BYU-Hawaii’s student employment office and with the Polynesian Cultural Center in which the possibility of posting student jobs in Handshake is being investigated.

Beyond exploring job opportunities and connecting with recruiters, students can schedule appointments with career counselors, register for internships for academic credit, view upcoming events, interviews and fairs, and keep a log of ideas in a personal career journal. Compellingly, the more students that use the system, the smarter it becomes. Over time the system will recommend increasingly relevant jobs, events, and information for students to consider in their career planning.

The Alumni & Career Services department previously used YCareers for some of these purposes. Handshake will replace YCareers at BYU-Hawaii.

Handshake is the emerging leader in helping college students and graduates plan, prepare, and engage in their future career.  This new technology is being used at many of the nation’s largest universities including Stanford University, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Chicago, and more. On top of that, over 50 % of Fortune 500 companies are using Handshake to recruit employees.

A kickoff event will be held Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 11 AM-12 PM in the Cannon Activities Center to familiarize the BYU-Hawaii campus with all that Handshake has to offer. All students are invited to attend the event and learn about this new platform and how it can serve them in their career plans. Faculty and staff are also welcome to attend.

In addition, students are welcome to go to the Career Center, located next to the cafeteria, to learn more. Or students can use their NET ID to log in to Handshake at and learn what Handshake can do to help them prepare for their future.
